Why is Box 32 and 32a blank on my HCFA 1500 form?

If a Provider does not have a group NPI number, the national standard for EDI claims is that Box 32 is not necessary as it is already displayed in Box 33.

Normally for claims standards, there are two sets of rules; one that applies to printed HCFA claims and a second set of standards that apply to EDI claims. As per the EDI claims rules, if a Provider does not have a group NPI number, the national standard for EDI claims is that Box 32 is not necessary as it is already displayed in Box 33.

There will be Payers from time to time that are an exception to the rule, and despite it being a national standard, they require specifications unique to their entity. If a Payer is asking for your physical location to be displayed in Box 32, the simple solution would be to take your Individual NPI number and have it repeat in Box 32a by placing it in the 'Group NPI' field in your Admin account under the Facility tab.
